Conductor, composer and pianist Gregor A. Mayrhofer brings strong technique, compelling musicianship and knowledge of psychology and philosophy to performances of repertoire ranging from Monteverdi and Purcell to works by composers of todayIn addition to Alan Gilbert, who oversaw his studies for a Master’s degree in conducting at New York’s Juilliard School, Mayrhofer has also studied and participated in master classes with Bernard Haitink, Fabio Luisi, Rüdiger Bohn, James Ross and Peter Eötvös.
Mayrhofer has conducted professional and student orchestras throughout Europe, in the United States, Russia and on the East African island of Mauritius. These have included the Ensemble Intercontemporain, the Sharoun Ensemble of the Berliner Philhamoniker, the Juilliard Orchestra and the SWR Sinfonieorchester.
As a composer Mayrhofer has received choral, chamber and symphonic commissions from the Bayerische Staatsoper München, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Staatsoper Hannover, Scharoun Ensemble of the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Ensemble Intercontemporain.
As a pianist, he regularly performs in jazz concerts with his brother Raphael as part of their duo Imbrothersation, first-prize-winner of Süddeutsche Zeitung‘s 2009/2010 Tassilo Kultur Preis.
In 2013, as Interim Director of Opera Mauritius, Mayrhofer conducted Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Offenbach’s Orphée aux enfers and an all-symphonic program. In 2015 he was appointed Assistant Conductor of the Ensemble Intercontemporain and in 2016, he made his debut with the Ensemble at the Philharmonie de Paris standing in at short notice for an indisposed Pablo Heras-Casado.
In 2017, Mayrhofer conducted premiere performances of his commission for the Ensemble Intercontemporain in the Philharmonies of Paris and Cologne and gave concerts with the Juilliard Orchestra at Alice Tully Hall, New York and the SWR Sinfonieorchester in Mannheim, Stuttgart and Karlsruhe. He serves as Assistant Conductor at the 2017 Lucerne Festival Academy, leads the Berliner Philharmoniker’s Scharoun Ensemble in the world premiere of his own octet in Italy and Austria and conducts the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble at the Ciclo de Música Contemporánea de Oviedo Festival in Spain.
2018 sees the premiere of his children’s opera, Die Drei Spinnerinnen (The Three Spinners), commissioned by the Staatsoper Hannover, and a contemporary program with the Münchner Kammerorchester.
Gregor Mayrhofer was born in Munich in 1987. He studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique (Paris), the Robert-Schumann-Hochschule (Duesseldorf) and the Juilliard School (NYC). Among many prizes and scholarships, he has received the Charles Schiff Conducting Award and the Bruno Walter Memorial Scholarship and was a recipient scholar of the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes.
